Kiln was composed for the Cinco Brass Quintet who premiered it in August of 2006. This piece involves a series of gradual transformations. It opens with a low, rumbling pattern in the piano that slowly moves to the middle register. Simultaneously, the piano pattern hardens into a more chordal texture. The brass quintet, meanwhile, enters very softly before eventually asserting itself. Kiln was partially inspired by Titian's The Martyrdom of St. Lawrence.
